Course Description
The Electronic Alarm and Security Technician program trains individuals to install electronic security monitoring systems and integrate new technology into residential and commercial settings. Electronic security technicians plan, install and troubleshoot residential and commercial security systems, including closed circuit TV, card access, intercom, video and other related equipment. Home Technology Integration has become an active field of employment as people integrate security, computer and telephony technology to better manage their assets. HTI allows people to save money and increase efficiency and enjoyment of their commercial or residential property.
Career Opportunities
This program has been developed as a result of research made into the security field among local companies. It had been indicated to us that there is a shortage of qualified people trained to work with residential and commercial low voltage systems such as security, video, audio and telephone systems. Further investigation found that a similar situation exists across the country with many small, medium and large companies all interested in trained employees.
The Electronic Alarm and Security Technician program focuses on three major areas:
Electronic security and controlled access systems, closed circuit television monitoring systems, and residential and commercial audio and video installation.
What makes our program unique?
Alarm and Security Technician has only recently been declared a designated trade in Nova Scotia. Certification of tradesmen in this industry is only now becoming available in the Province of Nova Scotia. Current proposed legislation recommends a 6000 hour apprenticeship for the trade. Nova Scotia is only now beginning to require that alarm and security installers be certified.
We have considered and implemented the goals and outcomes required by CANASA (the Canadian Association for Security Alarm installers) for this program in the development of our curriculum. We are currently the only institution offering a program in security alarm installation in the Maritime provinces.
